I was born to entertain, and so began by becoming a children’s entertainer –– a job I absolutely loved, but found myself wanting to work with a more diverse range of people. With this as a motivation I took a job as a carer, working with deafblind people, whom I initially assumed were either deaf OR blind, so it was quite a surprise to find out they were both! I began working on techniques, considering how I could adapt my act to be inclusive of this new group of people. Initially, I modified my work to be accessible to the visually impaired, before tweaking it further, eventually so successfully that I was not only able to perform magic for deafblind, but I was able to teach them how to perform the tricks themselves. This was a real turning point in my career; never before has magic been this accessible to deafblind people. It is an area of my work that I continue to develop and which continues to grow.
Many years have passed since I initially developed ‘inclusive magic’ and I am proud to have toured it around the country with my deafblind friend and assistant, Jimmy. We have performed for schools, disability groups, magic groups, and even for Sense, a UK deaf blind charity. With
the help of some very kind sponsors on social media, as well as funding from Jamie Raven, Derren Brown, Kaymar Magic, Uri Geller, Richard Caddell, Beard Juggling, and the Berglas Magic Foundation, and many many others - we have been able to take Magic Touch to the Blackpool Magic Convention many times. This convention is the world’s largest magic convention, and attracts more than 3,500 delegates from across the world. It’s appearances like this that open up many doors for us, and I am so grateful to everyone who has supported us, allowing a dream to be magicked into reality.
